on the lavender road Dream of lavender
Lavender was cultivated in Roman times to scent baths and household linens, and first appeared in Provence in the Middle Ages because of its olfactory and medicinal properties. Flower cultivation developed in the 19th century. Grasse perfumeries used high quality lavender essential oil to create elixirs.
The Luberon lavender route will delight lovers of colors and perfumes. Quiet villages, medieval castles, abbeys, vineyards, the ochres of Roussillon and breathtaking landscapes enhance your visits. Regarding lavender, there are many fields, distilleries and museums that will teach you the secrets of essential oils and the wonders of lavender. There are numerous lavender fields in Sault, Bonnieux, Gordes, Roussillon, Oppède and on the Claparade plateau. The high season runs from the end of June until the harvest festival on August 15.

ON THE WAY TO THE ABBAYES IN PROVENCE
€650, 9-hour day for 1 to 4 people
The Notre-Dame de Sénanque abbey, near Gordes, near the Luberon massif, represents the quintessence of Cistercian architecture. Built in the 12th century, it reached its peak in the 13th and 19th centuries. She owned mills, herds, a hospital in Arles and houses in Marseille, Carpentras and Cavaillon. Always led by Cistercian brothers, the visit reveals the pure lines of its church, cloister, dormitory, refectory...
Montmajour Abbey: founded in the 10th century by Benedictine monks, located on a hill near Arles, houses pre-Romanesque and Romanesque buildings. Vestige of its origins, the semi-troglodytic St-Pierre chapel, built under a rock. Dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, the Romanesque part includes the abbey church, the monks' buildings and the cloister, the jewel of the place: its statuary, its bas-reliefs and its columns with 48 sculpted capitals are unique. Added in the 14th century, the keep gives it a military air, while another 18th-century monastery adds a neoclassical touch.
The abbey of Saint-Roman houses the remains of a monastery dug into a hill from the 10th century. From the guarded car park, a path takes you through the scrubland to the top of the limestone hill. You will discover chapels and rock cells, large rooms or even cisterns and silos, vestiges of troglodyte monastic life. A true necropolis housing hundreds of tombs dug into the rock and the remains of the medieval fortification remain on the upper terrace. From there, a magnificent panorama is offered to you over the Rhône facing the Alpilles, with a unique view of Provence.
Located between Ménerbes and Lacoste, 8 kilometers from the Via Domitia, the abbey of Saint-Hilaire was founded by Carmelite hermits returning from Palestine in the 13th century. It has been classified as a private historic monument since 1961 and welcomes visitors all year round for guided tours of this exceptional site.
